The tension builds…
The tension is fast becoming palpable as the players start gathering outside the poker room to see their seating arrangements. Strategies are starting to form as they see the players that they know and the players that are complete mysteries.
This is the twelfth instalment of the All Africa Poker Tournament and look how far we have come. The first All Africa was held on the 12th of February 2005. 70 players gathered not quite realising that they were not just entering a poker tournament but were becoming part of Africa’s poker history. The 70 players played on banqueting round tables covered with white tablecloths and dealt to each other! It was a one-day event that required almost fourteen hours to complete and to crown the first champion. The winners cheques was a “paltry” R150,000.
Three years later we are playing on international standard poker tables with professional dealers and a TV table that has pinhole cameras and a massive production crew. We are fully subscribed at 120 players and it will take two and a half days to crown the champion that will receive the winner’s cheque of ONE MILLION RAND and a trip to Las Vegas to play in the WSOP!
The countdown begins, ten minutes to go…
