Poker history for Brazil at 2008 WSOP
Alexandre Gomes is the first Brazilian poker player in history to claim a bracelet after winning the 2008 WSOP Event #48, $2,000 No-Limit Hold'em. In addition to his WSOP gold bracelet, Gomes walked away with the whopping $770,540 first prize. Gomes outplayed the field of 2,317 players from all over the world to eventually go heads-up against Marco Johnson. Johnson kicked off the final stages of the tournament as chip leader and had no intention of going down without a fight. The final hand went down as follows: Johnson holding JS and QS moved all in against Gomes AS and KS. But the board showed 3H, 2H, 4D, AC and 4C in Gomes’ favour. Johnson still took home a substantial amount of $491,273, for finishing in the second place.
