European Poker Tour, around the corner!
30 January 2008. Marking the initiation of the European Poker Tour (Europe’s richest tour), the German open is already commencing and taking place! The picturesque casino Hohensyburg in Dortmund has seen the first day of the German Open, officially kicking of the EPT. With any luck this year’s EPT will top 2007’S huge participation (2007 saw the biggest EPT ever held, with 493 players) and perhaps last years prizepool as well (last years winning prize amounted to 672 000 Euros –claimed by Andreas Hoivold from Norway). Another Norwegian, who made waves in last year’s Dublin segment, was Annette Obrestad who came second…she kicked of the final event as chipleader, but lost to Reuben Peter still taking home a consolation prize of €297,800.
Some of the early drop outs include: Dario Minieri and well known online poker pro Sorel Mizzi. Some familiar faces are still in the loop, including WSOP bracelet winner Katje Thater and Mats Iremark. 75 Players managed to stay in the loop at the conclusion of Day 1a. Another celebrity sports star converting to poker is Germany’s tennis player Borris Becker (boasting four grand slam titles) who has confirmed that he will be playing in day 1b.
Borris has been known to play poker in between tennis games, to improve his concentration.
The EPT is still set to travel all over Europe seeing destinations like Barcelona, Dublin, London, the Paradise Islands, and Prague. Stay tuned for more updates, as the EPT unfolds.
