Evern Van Niekerk is the new champion and not only was this his first All Africa but also his first live tournament! Once again the tournament was a resounding success with the players enjoying the weekend and appreciating the effort and organisation that goes into running a successful event of this magnitude.

All of the finalist will be jetting off to the Aussie Millions tournament in Melbourne in January and maybe one of them will best that field and bring more glory to Southern African poker.

All of the finalists have also received cell phones sponsored by Samsung with Evern taking home the remarkable Omnia. This will help everyone stay in touch with their loved ones back home.

Watch out for the airing dates of this tournament on the All Africa Poker Channel on DSTV.

The next All Africa Poker Tournament will be held in February and this time seats to the WSOP will be up for grabs. The campaign begins tomorrow!

Good night from Piggs Peak Hotel and Casino in Swaziland, the home of All Africa Poker!

It would seem that Joggie’s run may be ending. He had pocket Kings and found the one nightmare hand that you never want to see. The Ace magnets proved to be very aptly named and they were in the hands of Francis van den Linden. No help and he is down to 30,000 chips.

Damien Cornelli doubled up at the expense of Andre Johnstone. Johnstone showed 8 8 and Damien “the curse” A 5. Named the curse because it is the hand that Darren Kramer has lost with twice at All Africa, Kramer is not allowed to play with it because it will cost him R100,000 to Ryan Brauer! The curse applied to Andre though this time…

Greg Ronaldson has been crowned the new All Africa Poker King. After an intense and grueling poker marathon Ronaldson, 24, walked away with the Million Rand prize. Piggs Peak Casino, Swaziland will also be flying him to Las Vegas in July 2008, to take up his seat at the coveted World Series of Poker $10,000 Main Event.

Ronaldson has been a regular face on the poker scene and a top finisher at the final tables over the past months, but has not placed higher than the fourth position. He went heads up with Michael Simoes, who finished runner-up at the final table and earned R400,000 and a complimentary package to participate at the World Series of Poker!

Ronaldson, the newest instant poker millionaire, intends to invest his winnings wisely to ensure a solid bank roll to continue to play in future live tournaments. He also hopes to follow in the footsteps of Ray Rahme, the historical US $3 million winner of the most recent African poker legend.

Piggs Peak added to the prize pool by offering another World Series of Poker package to the value of R150,000 to the player who placed third in the Main Event. The honours went to Daniel Callighan, who won R300,000, he will be joining the All Africa Poker Team at the World Series of Poker 2008.

The rest of the players who made the televised final table were Peter Kortleve who finished fourth, Jaco Mouton in fifth, Jaco Storm in sixth, Clyde Sham in seventh, Barry Shum in eighth, Hennie Appel in ninth and Andre Clarke in tenth.

“It was an exciting tournament with 111 entries and totalling 32 hours of play. We also had a great balance with both new and regular players. The lady entrants also proved that there are fists of steel under those velvet gloves”, explained Wendy Graaf, Marketing Manager at Piggs Peak Casino.

“Living up to our reputation of being the richest freeze-out poker tournament in Africa, we are pleased that we could create yet another instant poker millionaire,” continued Graaf.

Bob Masson who went out on the “bubble” – 11th place, and just missed out on the money was relieved to find out that even through he didn’t make the final table, Piggs Peak had given him a complimentary seat at the 12th All Africa Poker Tournament held from February 28 to March 2, 2008.

In addition to the Main Event, Piggs Peak provided a second chance tournament and cash games for players who were knocked out and spectators. The winner of the second chance tournament, with a prize of R80,000 was legendary Raymond Rahme.

“It was a fun weekend of poker, and the freeze-out format of this tournament was enjoyed by all. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone back on the 28th of February 2008 for the next All Africa Poker Tournament. In the meantime, keep an eye out for the live footage that will be launched on DSTV Channel 393 soon.”

KD JD is the hand which won Greg Ronaldson the title of All Africa Poker champion, and a million rand richer. He will also be flying to Las Vegas in July 2008, to take up his seat at the World Series of Poker $10,000 Main Event, and hopes to follow in the footsteps of Raymond Rahme’s $3 million US win.

30 year old Michael Simoes’ 10C KC was not to be the winning hand on the board of AS 10H QS 6S 3H, but a very happy Michael has lots to look forward to, with his fully complementary package to the World Series of Poker. He was literally speechless about his win, he only won his seat online in a satellite on Monday night, “My girlfriend went for a shower, so I had a few minutes to spare, so I went online and won the satellite … now I’m R400,000 richer!”. Michael is a director in a family steel business, and will be wisely investing his prize money.

It has been a marathon weekend of poker, 32 hours of tournament play and 111 players. Many new faces, amongst the experienced. 24 year old, Gauteng resident, Greg Ronaldson has been a regular face at final tables in the past months, not placing higher than 4th position, and he has now reached his goal. His first thoughts when he realised he had won the tournament was, “Thank goodness I didn’t come 4th!” Ronaldson will be investing his winnings and ensuring that he has a bankroll for future live tournaments.

A final word from the All Africa Poker team, is to thank all the staff and management at Piggs Peak Hotel & Casino, Swaziland for their tireless efforts. The team looks forward to welcoming everyone back on the 28th February 2008.
