All Africa Poker Champion cashes in on foreign ground

All Africa Poker Tournament’s latest champion Nicolas Zakhem has just earned a whopping US$77,000 for finishing in a highly respectable 7th place at the 2009 Lebanese Poker Championship Main Event.

Held at the Casino du Liban in Lebanon, this year’s event is said to be the largest live poker tournament to ever take place on Lebanese ground.

Nicolas Zakhem outsmarted close to two hundred players from all over the world, including big guns on the international poker scene, such as Joe Hachem. During his final hand, Zakhem went All-In with a pair of Cowboys, but when the board showed 5D, QS, 4C, AH, 4H, he was busted by Nabil Matta, who held an AC, 7H.

The All Africa Poker crew extends warm congratulations to Nicolas on this spectacular performance on foreign ground. “Go Zakhem! Once again, you proved that you have the stuff that champs are made of!”

Team All Africa Poker does us proud

What a week it’s been for Southern Africa poker lovers. Warren Zackey from Piggs Peak Casino sponsored Team All Africa Poker has finished in 22nd place at the 2009 World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas. Zackey’s Pocket Two’s saw him exit the tournament, however he still leaves Las Vegas with a tidy US$352,832 for his effort. That is roughly R2.87 million!

Zackey is the second Southern African poker player to progress this far at WSOP. In 2007 Ray Rahme made it to the final table and took 3rd place, putting Southern Africa on the global poker map and raising the profile of poker in the country. This year Rahme played a strong game but was eliminated earlier in the Main Event.

Despite his phenomenal achievement, Zackey remains humble. When interviewed on the All Africa Poker Channel Zackey thanked his family and fans for their ongoing support. Zackey has had some defining moments during WSOP, the most notable of which was finishing as chip leader for Day 5, a first for any player from SA. He also knocked out Leo Margets, the only female left in the main event.

Zackey wasn’t the only member of All Africa Poker who did SA proud. Robert Kay took 7th place in Event 56 and was the first Southern African player participating in this year’s WSOP to make it to the top 10 in a bracelet event. Both Ryan Brauer and Melanie Banfield made it into the money and both cashed. All Africa Poker Commentator Ryan Brauer was the 2nd best finisher from Team All Africa Poker when he exited in 500th position.

With a starting field of more than 6,494 players, the 2009 WSOP final table will take a break for the next four months and commence play again on 7 November. Known in the poker world as the November Nine, the remaining players are Darvin Moon, James Akenhead, Phil Ivey, Kevin Schaffel, Steven Begleiter, Eric Buchman, Joe Cada, Antoine Saout and Jeff Shulman, arguably one of the most talented Main Event final tables to have been assembled in years.

As the All Africa Poker Team concludes its WSOP journey, it leaves South Africa ranked in 26th position on the 2009 WSOP World Standings. No mean feat when comparing SA’s 23 players to the USA’s top ranking with nearly 20 000 players! Stats are based on the number of players, wins/bracelets and total money earned.

Notes on the November Nine

From some of the biggest names in poker to new comers, the WSOP 2009 November Nine is an eclectic mix of players. Here are some facts about each of the players.

Darvin Moon: 45, Maryland USA. Not only is he the chip leader but also the least experienced out of the November Nine. The WSOP 2009 was the self employed wood logger’s first visit to Vegas.

Eric Buchman: 29 Valley Stream, NY, USA. His best result at the WSOP was a second place finish in 2006. Buchman’s main focus in the final is all about the money. “I don't really care about getting recognition… that doesn't really matter. I'm just here to win money.”

Steven Begleiter: 47, New York. Begleiter won on his entry to the WSOP through the Newcastle Poker Tour, which is a 20-person poker league with his friends. “I'm a very bad golfer, but I'm a decent poker player.”

Jeff Shulman: 34, Las Vegas. Editor of Card Player magazine and caused some controversy by saying he’ll throw the bracelet in the rubbish if he wins it. The experienced poker player started the playing in the 3rd grade at summer camp.

Joseph Cada: 21, Michigan, is the youngest player in the November Nine. Much to his mother’s disapproval, he dropped out of college to pursue a career in poker.

Kevin Schaffel: 51, Florida. Started playing poker at 11 and quoted on one of his profiles as saying “let me win a big tournament SOON so I can retire and play more, lol”

Phil Ivey: 33, Las Vegas. Arguably the best poker player in the world he has a record 7 WSOP bracelets. Outside of poker Ivey is a basketball fan supporting the LA Lakers and is often seen wearing basketball jerseys.

Antoine Saout: 25, France. He has only been playing poker for the 18 months. Saout is the first French player since 1998 to make the final table.

James Akenhead: 27, London UK. The former railroad conductor first gained attention when he was beaten by Grant Hinkle in the $1,500 no-limit hold ‘em final last year.

Warren Zackey eliminated in 22nd position

Sorry Warren Zackey supporters, he's been eliminated in 22nd position with $352,832.

Ian Tavelli has been making very large opening raises all day. He did it again just now on the outer table, open-raising to 1 million with blinds at 80,000 and 160,000. Warren Zackey was in the small blind and reraised all in for a total of 3.525 million. When action folded back to Tavelli, he called.

Zackey: {2-Spades} {2-Hearts}
Tavelli: {Q-Spades} {J-Spades}

There was some mrmuring around the rail upon seeing both Zackey's and Tavelli's hands, but Tavelli's call worked out on a flop of {6-Clubs} {8-Spades} {Q-Hearts} , where he paired queens. Zackey was out in 22nd place after the {6-Diamonds} turn and {3-Hearts} river.

Tavelli now has 11.2 million chips.

Our sincerest congratulations to Warren on his superb performance at the World Series of Poker. You did us proud and look forward to seeing you at future final tables!
