News Up and coming players fill us in
What was the defining moment for you in your poker career?
AJ: “Thus far in my career, coming 4th at All Africa Poker and winning the Poker Cruise would be my defining moments, as far as tournaments are concerned. As far as cash games are concerned, it was showing a profit 19 months in a row. I believe though, that I will have many more defining moments which will supersede these in the future.”
GR: “The most defining moment in my poker career was my first final table appearance at the SA Poker Open last year in May. Since then, it has to be my win at the last All Africa Poker tournament in November, which finished off an amazing year of poker.”
What have you been up to since the last All Africa Poker Tournament?
AJ: “Nothing special, just normal festivities, working on my poker game and learning more about other varieties of poker. Hold’em gets a bit boring at times.”
GR: “Since the last All Africa Poker, I traveled to Prague and the Bahamas to play in events on the European Poker Tour. The level of play is incredibly high, but it was a great experience and tons of fun.”
How has your life and poker changed since your final table appearance at the All Africa Poker Tournament?
AJ: “Honestly my life hasn’t changed much apart from the fact that I travel a lot more (over 40 flights in 2007), excluding the ones I missed … lol. Aah, I did buy myself a nice car with some of the winnings.”
GR: “Well, winning the All Africa Poker obviously comes with a very nice pay day, but other than the money, it’s great to earn the respect of other poker players.”
Andre’s tip for all you aspirant poker players out there, is to find some reading material about basic strategies at first. And practice these at low stakes or even on play money tables. Just to get a feel for the game. Try and implement different strategies in your play. Practice, practice and more practice. Before you start playing for any kind of money which is going to affect your life style, you should read up on effective bank roll management, “I cannot stress this highly enough. I, like many others have had to learn the hard way. Good luck and see you on the felt.” Andre, a solid tournament player who is always a force to be reckoned with at the poker table, can be seeing strutting his stuff at the upcoming 12th All Africa Poker Tournament.
Greg’s advice is to start small and build your way to the top. “The more you read and learn about the game the better – even the pros learn something new every day.”Greg will be back to defend his title, and with the experience he has gained from his travels to Prague and the Bahamas, he will not be dethroned easily. But with players such as David Dadic, Sami Sadia, Andre Johnstone, Marco Farrell, two time champion Peter Vermaas and Martie Faber to play against, Greg will certainly have his work cut out for him.
