The 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event was rumoured to be the “Year of the Pro.” However, the question on everyone’s lips now, is “will a pro ever win the WSOP Main Event again?” Looking at the November nine it is clear that once again, another newcomer to the poker scene will walk away with the ultimate victory. The overnight rise of Chris Moneymaker in 2003 from poker fish to world champion has helped to increase the number of participants from around 800 to more than five and a half thousand strong in the last five years. Judging from the sheer volumes of competitors, one has to admit that the odds of a pro claiming the Main Event bracelet have significantly dropped and at this stage, in the sea of poker hopefuls, it looks like the fish are rather the ones eating the sharks. Poker tells you what to do

The ability to read the poker tells of opponents around the poker table is a key skill that differentiates a professional poker player from an amateur.
Participants at the next World Series of Poker Academy clinic taking place from the 6th to the 7th of September 2008 at the Bicycle Casino, Los Angeles will have the opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge on how to detect bluffs and read competitors. In addition to learning to read poker players tells there will also be live hand demonstrations of poker strategies such as playing your position, calculating pot odds and when to switch poker styles during a tournament from some of pokers best professionals. At the end of the first day, there will be a FreeRoll tournament, during which entrants can apply their newly acquired skills and at the same time stand in line to win a $5,000 entry into one of the WSOP Circuit Events. 2008 WSOP Action airing on ESPN

Tomorrow evening, the 29th of July at 8pm ET, 2008 WSOP footage of the 2008 WSOP will be launched on ESPN. The first two episodes to be shown will be of the final table Event #1 $10,000 Pot Limit Hold’em.

This is a battle of the best, as this star-studded event included top live and online poker professionals to the likes of Andy Bloch; Kathy Liebert, Mike Sexton; Phil Laak; Patrik Antonius; Nenad Medic; Mike “SowersUNCC” Sowers and Amit “Amak316” Makhija.

Over the next 17 weeks, a total of 33 hours of television coverage will be broadcasted on ESPN, until the final table of the Main Event takes place in November.

Ray Rahme does it again

The past year on the poker scene has been marked by some unexpected turns in a number of significant poker events, but Ray Rahme’s victory this past weekend at the All Africa Poker Tournament held at Piggs Peak Hotel & Casino in Swaziland, certainly came as no surprise. Piggs Peak’s very own poker legend did it again, playing an outstanding game throughout, earning every bit of his One Million Rand first prize! “This is my best tournament so far,” Ray stated humbly. Ray Rahme made the headlines when he won twenty-one Million Rand for his third place finish at the World Series of Poker 2007, after winning his WSOP seat package through the May 2007 All Africa Poker tournament.

What did come as a surprise, is the performance of runner up Allistair Didloff. Allistair was a late entry and ended up outlasting a tough field of experienced players and former All Africa Poker champions, with no re-buys or add ons, to finally go heads-up with Ray at a total investment of only R77, to walk away with a whopping R400,000 for his second place finish and a trip to Las Vegas to play in the main $10,000 Main Event of the WSOP.

This All Africa Poker Tournament also sports another poker record. Ten WSOP Packages, for each of the players who made it to the final table, valued at R150,000 each were included in the prize pool! So joining Team All Africa Poker are Ray Rahme, Michael Simoes, Greg Ronaldson Peter Vermaas; Gordon Harris; James Gubb; Ryan Eber; Darren Miller; Nik Rujevic; David Spangenberg; Reynhart van Rooyen and of course Allistair Didloff.

2008 WPT Borgata Poker Open schedule announced

The 2008 WSOP November Final Table

It’s taken 12 days but after great poker play, strategy and patience we finally have the final table of the 39th World Series Of Poker. As decided earlier this year, play has been suspended until 9 November when the final nine players will return to Las Vegas to battle it out for the $9.1 million first prize plus the converted gold bracelet. Tiffany Michelle – The Last Woman Standing at 2008 WSOP

The last woman standing, the dynamic Tiffany Michelle a.k.a “Hot Chips” has made it to the top thirty of the World Series of Poker 2008. And judging by the size of her chip stack, it looks like she might very well be headed to the final table.With an astounding 9.75 Million in chips, she now sits with the third biggest stack, currently rivaled only by her opponents: Dennis Phillips and Craig Marquis. Should she succeed and manages to land herself a spot in the November Nines, she will be the second female to make it to the final table in the WSOP’s history!
